LEICESTERSHIRE LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION

As one of our local parishes, we are writing to set out the Government’s decision on local government reorganisation and what it means for parishes at this stage.

The Government today announced its decision on the future structure of local government in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The Government has confirmed that, from April 2028 two new unitary councils will replace the 10 existing councils across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Those councils will be:

  • A unitary council covering Leicester, Oadby and Wigston and parts of Blaby, Charnwood, and Harborough
  • A unitary council for the remaining area of Leicestershire and Rutland (including HBBC)

This map may help you understand the new areas, click to view.

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) will become part of the new unitary council from April 2028.

While significant organisational changes lie ahead, HBBC along with all nine existing councils will continue to operate and deliver services as normal throughout the transition period.  There is no immediate action you need to take as a result of this announcement.

We will contact you directly if any changes affect our shared work, services or local arrangements.

All 10 councils are establishing a temporary website which will be the single source of information on LGR for our area. We will share more details soon. Please use the website for the latest information. If you have questions regarding the reorganisation programme, please contact me.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement as we work together to manage this change and keep our residents and communities at the heart of the transition.

We will of course also keep you updated at future Parish Forums.

Best wishes

Bill Cullen

Chief Executive
