Move into Mindfulness with New Exhibition

Move into Mindfulness with New Exhibition

A new exhibition will open at Hinckley’s Atkins Gallery coinciding with National Mental Health Week and to support residents’ health and wellbeing.

Colour Yourself Calm is a multi-project exhibition curated by local artist Shani Smith, with support from Hinckley & Bosworth Brough Council, and promotes the benefits of art and movement when it comes to supporting mental health.

The exhibition is now open and runs until 29 May and is set to help visitors ‘Move into Mindfulness’.

It will feature artwork from various artists and organisations in the community, including a community therapeutic project from Art to Heart funded by IM Properties; a photographic display of Shibashi Qi Gong, a form of moving meditation by Lindsay of Mayfield Wellbeing; and pieces by Hinckley & Rugby Building Society in conjunction with Art to Heart.

Staff at the Building Society rose to the challenge of creating art on their lunch breaks to support relaxation, reduce stress and improve productivity.

There will also be a display called Inspirational People, which has been created by Hinckley’s Ten2 Gallery on Castle Street as part of their art classes programme.

As part of Colour Yourself Calm exhibition, residents can also enjoy two special events.

The first is a chance to meet the artist Shani Smith, who will be at Atkins Gallery on Tuesday 21 May from 10am-12pm for a FREE artist demo. There will also be a selection of art materials for visitors to try their hand at.

The second session will be a Vision Board workshop on 28 May, with a morning session planned from 10am-12pm and an afternoon session from 1.30pm until 3.30pm.

Vision boards are a creative way of helping you to reflect on what is important in your career, home or life in general, and can also encourage you to take the first steps to making dreams and goals a reality.

The workshop will cost £15 per person, which includes all materials and resources and a drink from the onsite Hansom Café. For more information or to book a place on the Vision Board Workshop, contact Lindsay Orton on lindsay.orton@hotmail.co.uk or 07498 841536.

Council Community Houses transformed into Centres for Warmth

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council

Hinckley Hub, Rugby Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire, LE10 0FR

PRESS RELEASE

22 May 2024

Council Community Houses transformed into Centres for Warmth

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council’s Community Houses will also be operating as ‘Centres for Warmth’ to provide warm, safe, and welcoming spaces for residents who are struggling with the cost of living thanks to funding from Cadent.

The centres, based in Earl Shilton, Barwell, Wykin and Burbage, have proven to be a lifeline to many residents for many years and this new funding will extend the offer of services available at the houses as well as providing opportunities to take some of the expanded services available out into communities across the borough.

The Houses work with residents and young people, encouraging them to become involved in community projects and activities, helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and encourage a sense of pride in the area. At each centre, Welfare Support Officers work directly with residents who are struggling to pay bills by sharing ways to maximise income. Benefits advice is also provided, while residents can learn about how to gain access to grants.

The funding from Cadent will provide support with money management, energy advice, ‘cooking on a budget’ classes, carbon monoxide awareness sessions with access to free alarms, home energy efficiency advice and free gas safety checks.

At a recent visit, representatives from Cadent and the Borough Council got involved with the cooking on a budget session, learning to cook family favourites recipes using a slow cooker.

The lessons are part of a series of slow cooker session at the George Ward Centre, Barwell. Funded through Cadent, a community development worker will give six slow cooker sessions at the Family and Toddler group on a fortnightly basis to show young families how they can make delicious, healthy food in simple and budget-friendly ways. Free hot drinks and refreshments will also be provided.

Executive Member for Housing at Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, Cllr Michael Mullaney said: “We know that these centres are a lifeline to residents in need, offering invaluable support and advice from our trained and knowledgeable welfare support officers.

“Thanks to the generosity of Cadent, we can extend the services we can offer, and we hope that it will help to benefit many more residents in need. With the expansion of our welfare support team, the Borough Council has already been able to support more than 200 residents in need this financial year.”

Emma Turnbull, Safeguarding Specialist, Cadent said: “We are delighted to be working with the Borough Council and assisting the Community Houses to become ‘Centres for Warmth’. We already have 200 centres across the country and the funding we can provide will allow for expert local advisors to provide financial, energy efficiency and gas safety advice, and purchase hundreds of slow cookers which we hope will be of benefit to local residents.”
