Flooding Drop in Sessions

Residents and businesses are being encouraged to attend a series of flooding drop-in events that will take place across the county starting on 27 March.

Those that attend will have the opportunity to talk to key agencies including the Environment Agency and Leicestershire County Council, in its capacity of Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) and Highway Authority, about their experiences and get the latest updates on flood related work. Attendees will also be able to get advice on how to be prepared against further flooding, as well as having the opportunity to visit the FloodPod – a trailer packed with real life property flood resilience (PFR) measures.

At the FloodPod visitors can see and learn about solutions available that are designed specifically to protect homes and businesses from flooding.

The scheme is now open for applications and will close at midnight on 22 April.

Cllr Michael Mullaney, Executive Member for the Voluntary Sector, said: “I am so pleased to announce applications are now open for local groups to apply for funding to put on a variety of events to bring our communities together to honour and celebrate VE-Day across the borough. LEICESTERSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL – ONE COUNCIL FOR LEICESTERSHIRE

In December 2024, the Government published the English Devolution White Paper. This made it clear that the Government wants to move away from ‘two tier’ local government, like Leicestershire, and expects all county councils, district councils and neighbouring unitary councils (in this case, Leicester City and Rutland) to work up proposals for change.

Reorganisation needs to be agreed before there can be agreed devolution of powers and responsibilities to Leicestershire, (Leicester and Rutland) from the Government.

Please visit  One Council for Leicestershire for more information about the LCC proposals and to respond to the on-line consultation.

Council officer recognised for saving colleague’s life

A Borough Council employee who saved the life of a colleague while at work has been recognised with a community award.

Andy McGreal, grounds maintenance supervisor, gave lifesaving first aid to colleague Pete Battison late last year.

Pete, from the council’s waste management team, had stopped breathing while at work early in the morning. Andy made sure his airway was clear and got him breathing again until paramedics arrived. Colleagues Ian Pinfold and Tony Cunnington cleared the office, while Liam Fisher called Pete partner, Jade.

Andy’s quick thinking, calm approach and decisive actions helped to save Pete’s life. Cllr Robin Webber-Jones, the Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, presented Andy with a community award at a council meeting on 28 January.

The Mayor read out a personal message from Pete. It read: “My partner Jade and I would personally like to thank Andy, Ian, Tony and Liam for their fast and robust actions during my time of need.

“I have a rare neurological disorder that can affect me at times. Due to the team’s fast actions, robust thinking and teamwork all four of them managed to keep me alive during my time of need. Andy made sure my airway was clear and made sure I was breathing, which was no mean task. Liam called my partner to inform her, while Tony and Ian kept the office clear, always ensuring my dignity.

“The true spirit of friendship and teamwork was shown in my time of need by these four selfless individuals. I, my partner Jade and my children would like to thank them all for their teamwork to save my life.”

Now Andy and Pete are keen to make as many people as possible aware of the importance of first aid training so that others can be helped.

Andy said: “I’m grateful I was able to help my colleague through the first aid training I’d received. I fully believe that first aid is the most important skill anyone can learn, and I would encourage everyone to take the time to learn at least the basics of first aid as you never know when you may need to employ it.”

Cllr Stuart Bray, Leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said: “It has been remarkable to hear and read about what Andy and his colleagues did to help Pete that day. Pete’s family and friends and everyone who works with him are so grateful for their swift actions.

“It also highlights just how important it is not only to learn first aid, but to also keep on top of those skills. I would urge everyone to learn the basics of first aid if they can.”
